Boylston Shul-Verein is built.

1872

Originally the Independent German Club of West Roxbury, it is located at 45 Danforth Street. Formed by local German-American residents in 1871 and incorporated on September 17, 1874, the club offers German language classes for children, a drama club, gymnasium, and singing group. The German Saturday School is started soon after by several German musicians including August Fiedler (uncle of Arthur Fiedler) and Carl Ludwig. It is reputed to be the oldest language school for children in Massachusetts. The school is suspended due to anti-German sentiment during World War I and again in 1940. It reopens, operating out of classrooms at Boston University, and then moves to Westwood in the 1960s.
